Take a Tip From Dell's Use of Social Networking

Dell uses a variety of social networking tools to engage and interact with customers. Social networking is so firmly entrenched in Dell's corporate culture that the company’s efforts in this area are measurable.

Dell Outlets operates a Twitter account that as of July 13, 2009 had 851,662 followers. People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available. In a year and a half period, over $1 million in revenue was generated through Twitter.

Corporate blogs are inexpensive and easy to implement. While the information acquired or disseminated by a blog may not directly result in sales, it can help companies match customer needs with products and make overall process improvements that can result in increased revenue in the future.

Here are some examples of social networking by some of the world’s industry leaders:

Cadillac Notes - The official blog for Cadillac features product news and commentary from the Cadillac team.
Power Generation Online Community – A Caterpillar Inc. blog where consulting specifying engineers, operators and other power generation professionals can exchange ideas and best practices.
The Heart of a Runner – Hosted by CVS Pharmacy, this blog chronicles a man’s attempt to defeat heart disease.
